Wineries

California wine making first began in Southern California.  In 1765 the first vines were planted in Southern California. Southern California was filled with vineyards and wineries.  In 1848 the California Gold Rush brought thousands of people to Northern California. The new settlers and fortune seekers brought with them the demand for wine. Shortly thereafter the fertile soil and weather in Napa and Sonoma were discovered and now the rest is history. Monterey, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties filled in with more vineyards in the 1990’s. California wine has a long and continuing history, and in the late twentieth century became recognized as producing some of the world’s finest wine.

One of the turning points for California wine occurred on May 24, 1976, when California producers entered their wines in a blind tasting, comparing California wines with French wines.

The Judgement of Paris organized by Steven Spurrier a British wine merchant. The judging panel was dominantly French, so it was a shock when the California wines were ranked the highest in both of the competition categories: Chardonnays and reds category. The Chardonnay was made by our friend Mike Grgich, winemaker at that time for Chateau Montelena and the red made by Stag’s Leap, Cabernet Sauvignon.

One of the few remaining bottles of ex-cellar 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay has been sold by Spectrum Wine Auctions for $11,325. The wine, which beat both French and American competitors in the 1976 ‘Judgment of Paris’ tasting, was bought by UK-based software engineer Jason Corcoran.

Breweries

Breweries in California which historically were dominated by large brewers that sold their beer regionally, nationally and internationally. Recently California  law changed, which has made the way for smaller breweries which includes microbreweries. Brewing companies range widely in the volume and variety of beer produced, ranging from small breweries to massive multinational conglomerates. Since 1983, California has allowed breweries to sell beer on their premises, giving rise to numerous brewpubs and microbreweries.

Breweries in California produce a wide range of beers in different styles that are marketed locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. California dominates craft beer production in the United States. There are over 1000 craft brewers statewide in California. Many towns have their favorite home town craft brewery.

Sierra Nevada Brewing, based in Chico, is the best-selling California craft brewery, ranking No. 3 among all craft breweries in the country. San Diego’s Stone Brewing ranks No. 9 nationally, and four companies in the Top 10: New Belgium, Duvel Moortgat, Gambrinus and CANarchy.

In California for craft beer there are more than 3,670,980 barrels of craft beer produced per year. Over all in the US retail dollar sales of craft beer is $29.6 billion, of the $116.0 billion U.S. beer sales across the country. If you ever want to know how much fun it is to drink beer all you have to do is visit the Hofbräuhaus in Munich Germany on a Friday or Saturday night!

There may be some debate: San Diego County has the largest number of craft breweries at 165. While some women shy away from beer, the best place to find a member of the opposite sex may be your favorite winery or brewery, try them both, as you never know.

Wineries and Breweries

The winery business and the brewery business are engaged in a business activity that is fun, interesting and romantic. You cannot mention these specialized spirit businesses without also talking about hotel, real estate and food service. Guests, patrons and vendors come to your geographic area, the first thing they need is a place to stay.If your Presidential suite at the Winery is full then they need to find a hotel or other accommodations (Airbnb or VRBO). Once they drink your products, they need something to eat. Many wineries and breweries have some sort of food service facility or restaurant attached to their tasting room. So, all of this is warm, romantic and integrated. You provide value to your guests and club members when you can fix them up with a total accommodations package.
